ស្លឹក​បាស, Ivy gourd (Coccinia Grandis)

 ស្លឹក​បាស, Scarlet Ivy Gourds (Coccinia Grandis). It's a wild indingenouse veggie that is well-loved  among the Khmers. Tender leaves and shoots are harvested harvested and eaten as vegetable.  It is commonly used in traditional Khmer dishes. In soup, stew, or a quick blanched  serves as a table condiments. 
  • Native to tropical Asia. 
  • It is suitable for container or in-grounds planting. 
  • This tropical edible need protection from the afternoon Sun in a Mediterranean climate of USDA zone. 
  • Ripened fruits is with a slight sweet taste. As a young child, this edible was an excellent choice to snack on when thirsty out in the field working.

I had to purchase these cuttings. Chaya is a leafy fast growing  perennial shrubs.  It's a hardy plant and grow to about 10-20ft. Tall. Chaya propagation is commonly done by cutting. The milky  sap healed and sealed the wound if kept dry a few days prior to planting.  Here in USDA Zone 9a winter temperatures is as lowas 25 °F.   It's frost sensitive. Once established it can be winterizing by heavily mulching it to protect the roots. It'll be killed by hard freeze but usually re-sprouts from the roots.  Extremely pest resistant. Cleome Gynandra or មមាញ, in Khmer.  The Khmers harvest tender leaves, flowers and shoots for consumption. It is mostly consumed in a pickled form use alongside grilled meat of your choice, a quick blanched as wrap for dipping  as a side dish,  or as an ascent veggies in stew. A native to Cambodia. A tropical and subtropical Perennial.  Plants reseed itself under a suitable condition  Sow seeds once temperatures 60 °F  and above. This wild edible thrive in hot weather.  It cannot olerate if temperatures drop below 50 °F 40 days maturity.  It's an erected shrubs, grow to about 3ft. height and width.   All parts of  plant is hairy, and somewhat statically sticky.  Plant is mildly bitter taste, with distinctive mustard scent.  Contained protein, carbohydrates, and is high in vitamins A and C, calcium, phosphorus and iron. 6232019
